The Mood Board Creative Community: August

We're better when we create together. (Creative prompts inside!)

Can you believe it’s already August? I honestly can’t, but I’m glad we’re one month closer to fall – my favorite season. However, I don’t want to get ahead of myself, as it’s important to be present in the current season and live in the moment. So here we are, in August. And on my mind this month is the way that my creativity has absolutely blossomed once I realized the importance – no, the necessity – of working together with my creative community. That’s why this month’s theme is “Together.”

Last year, I joined a 13-week Artists’ Way workshop hosted in Milwaukee by the incredibly Christina Persika. In this space, which felt like a creative support group in the best way, I was able to talk about my goals, projects, and dreams for myself out loud and get the support and ideation from the other people in the group. I saw firsthand the importance of saying our dreams out loud and how far that kind of support and community can help you move toward them. From that workshop, I found the courage and opportunity to quit my 9-5 and go freelance full-time. I’ve also met some creative friends that I go to all the time for ideas, support, and inspiration – and I think it’s safe to say they come to me for the same, as well.

Then last summer I participated in Haley Jakobson’s Writing With Confidence workshop, where I met a group of writers that genuinely inspire me daily. We always say that writing is a team sport, and I couldn’t agree more. Being able to read each other’s work, bounce ideas off each other, and talk through our projects has been invaluable. And our friendships and support for one another have grown beyond writing in ways that have made my life incredibly bright and inspiring.

I say all of this because without these creative communities, my work as an artist and writer would still exist in some form, but I imagine it wouldn’t feel as good and successful and empowering as it does. Creating together is one of the greatest joys of my life, and this month, I encourage you all to consider where you can find community to create with. Perhaps it’s even here in The Mood Board community – in the chat, office hours, or even just the comment section. If you’re looking for your people, don’t be afraid to comment!
